Ode to the Strong Woman

You’ve probably met her; you just don’t know it yet

You know her. She sits beside you on the bus. You went to school with her. She’s in the cubicle next to yours.

She’s your mother. Your sister. The cousin no one could ever understand. You could even be her, though you might not realize it yet.

She’s outgoing. The go-getter. The one in charge of her own life. The one with a hundred calendars and to-do lists. The one who organizes her things until they are properly smoothed out and perfect. Without a single spot. Without a single wrinkle.

But she could also be the quiet one. The one who doesn’t say much. The one you don’t notice. The pansy — silent and unassuming, close to the ground, and easily forgotten in a world of sunflowers. She could be colorless as compared to a rose, and yet her strength and love could be so ocean-deep, no one is able to fathom it.

Sometimes, she’s a beauty that causes heads to turn wherever she goes. She flashes a smile that dazzles. She flips her head over her shoulder. She’s confident. She’s sure of herself. She knows what she’s doing and where she’s going. She knows what she wants in life and the dreams and goals she’s headed towards.

But she could also be the plain and simple one. The one you might have thought…
